Julie July Band Flight of Fancy… Their best album yet!
“It’s been an interesting journey so far for Julie July in finding her feet as both an interpreter of the works of Sandy Denny and discovering her own voice as an artist and performer. Part of this has been the formation of the Julie July Band and its development through the span of three albums and finding its own distinctive unique identity. The good news is that on their third album together Flight of Fancy they have found that unique identifiable sound, which they sought. This is a tight, professional unified band that knows its strengths and plays to them with equal ease and clarity. Nowhere is it more obvious than on this record which has eleven original tracks that hark back to the 60s and 70s for ideals and nuances but is rich, strong and contemporary. The songs flow together a seamless mix of folk, rock, blues, and US West Coast sounds with Julie’s clear powerful vocals out front nowhere more comfortable and relaxed than on songs like Mellow, the beautiful Simply Yours, and the opening title track Flight of Fancy. The jagged imagery of Front Page with its caustically true lyrics and the bluesy Risky Game show a band and artist fully united in sound and approach. Everything is right here from the period sounds and nods to the classic blues-rock and folk-rock sounds to the sharp penetrable lyrics and clearly punctuated vocals. It’s a flight worth taking and a fanciful one too but its feet are solidly on the ground. This is clearly the work of people that know their art and handle it with care, and precision and Flight of Fancy shows this in spades. “
