AydrA
AydrA was born in 1986 under the moniker hydra. During this period, they recorded 3 demo tapes which were well received by the specialized press, playing a power/thrash genre. This led them to perform alongside bands like Strana Officina, Sabotage, Fil di Ferro, and Kurnalcool. In 1991, with the entry of Mauro Pacetti on bass and vocals and Francesco Olivi on guitar, the genre shifted towards thrash/death metal. They recorded 2 more demo tapes and caught the attention of David Lenci, owner of Red House Recording, during a concert in 1995. He offered to produce their first mini CD, ”Psycho Pain Control.” Meanwhile, their genre evolved towards an American death metal influence, shaped by bands like Death, Cynic, and Atheist.
They also participated in a compilation CD, ”Scream from Italy Vol 2 and 3,” released by Dawn of Sadness, and were passionate about the AydrA sound. This led to the release of the mini CD ”Psycho Pain Control” through the same label. The mini CD received excellent reviews in both foreign and Italian press, leading to performances across Italy with bands like Natron, Undertakers, Sadist, Necromass, Detestor, etc.
In 1999, AydrA released their first full-length album, ”Icon of Sin,” through Sound Machine Recordings, again produced by David Lenci and promoted by the Kick Promotion Agency. The album was acclaimed as a manifesto of Italian technical death metal. After the album’s recordings, Mauro focused solely on vocals, and Andrea Mastromarco joined the band on bass.
The album circulated widely among industry professionals and was even cited in some American webzines as one of the best technical death metal albums of 1999. During this time, the band opened for Napalm Death, Avulsed, Sadist, and collaborated with Infernal Poetry, Dark Lunacy, Disease, and numerous other Italian bands. The album was also reissued in Malaysia and Indonesia.
This marked the beginning of the compositions for their second full-length album, ”Hyperlogical Non-sense.” They were contacted by Extreme Rising, specifically Frank Andiver (from Labirinth), who, having known AydrA through ”Icon of Sin,” proposed to produce their new album.
”Hyperlogical Non-sense” was released in 2004 with self-distribution, continuing their journey in technical death metal. The specialized press enthusiastically welcomed the new work. However, due to instability in the lineup and other work-related reasons, the band couldn’t properly promote the album. In 2007, after several lineup changes, the band took a long hiatus.
In 2013, Mauro and Andrea decided to reunite the band for some shows, but Andrea left shortly after for reasons that led him to work outside Italy. Andrea Massetti then joined as his replacement. With a completely revamped lineup, AydrA toured in the Balkans supporting Infernal Poetry. After these concerts, they began working on new songs.
In 2016, an anthology of their demos and first 2 albums was released by a Russian label, as well as another in Panama. Now, AydrA is in the process of finishing recordings for their new material. Their new full-length album is set to be released in May 2024.
AydrA has signed with Rude Awakening Rec. for the limited edition vinyl release of their first 3 albums: ”Psycho Pain Control,” ”Icon of Sin,” and ”Hyperlogical Non-sense.” Before the new album, a live CD containing concerts from 2001 and 2013 will be released, along with another album of ”Rare Tracks” containing demo versions, covers, and collaborations throughout the band’s long history. Additionally, Rude Awakening will handle the release of the last album titled ”Leave to Nowhere” in both CD and vinyl formats.
